Preamble

The European clash and memories of 1979. The both teams have a unique relationship, also competing in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the continental championship decades past that connects these teams, with the groundbreaking transfer Francis scoring the winner of a largely forgettable match to claim legendary status for the red half of Nottingham.

"Forest's famous bosses, modestly dressed amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the celebrations," commented the writer. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is unlikely to be replicated – from second tier to continental competition in three seasons."

It's also interesting to consider Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Scandinavian side to reach the final under English manager Bob Houghton.

Tonight's game is a far cry from that summit, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are full of confidence after beating Liverpool 3-0 at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since last month following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.

Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. The Glasgow club have already been beaten by a Braga this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the league rankings at the midpoint of the initial phase with no points whatsoever. They badly want a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a recovery for a knockout position.

Updates will continue with all the evening matches and provide the most recent results from the previous games, including Aston Villa v Young Boys and Rotterdam vs Glasgow.
