The English along with Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
